Nutrition and Dietetics

What is a Dietitian?

Dietitians are university-qualified experts in food and nutrition.  They have the skills and training to provide personalised advice about your dietary intake to meet your health and lifestyle needs.

Why should I consider a Dietitian?

What you eat is the single most important factor affecting your future health.  There is so much information available today on food and various diets.  A lot of it is misleading and confusing.  If you are working to get your health and food intake back on track a Dietitian will be able to provide information on the best foods for you.  They can give you an individualised eating plan based on your tastes and preferences.

What does it involve?

A one-to-one meeting to talk about your health concerns.  A thorough diet history will be taken and advice given on which healthy foods are best for you.  You will leave with a clear idea (and plan) on healthy eating practices to maximise your health and enjoyment of food.

What sort of clients visit a Dietitian?

Dietitians see clients from all different walks of life with various health concerns and issues.  Some of the more popular reasons include:

  • General food and nutrition needs for good health
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Women's health issues: pregnancy, menopause
  • First Foods for Babies
  • Food allergy and intolerances
  • Stomach and bowel problems
  • Eating to maximise sports performance

Health Coaching

What is a Health Coach?

Health coaches assist their clients to achieve positive health and lifestyle outcomes through attitude and behaviour change.

Why should I consider a Health Coach?

There is growing recognition that simply telling clients what to do is not effective in bringing about long-term behaviour change.  This creates frustration for both clients and health professionals.  Health coaching motivates clients towards readiness to change, assists them to change unhelpful thinking patterns and encourages self-regulation and self-management of lifestyle risk factors (Health Coaching Australia website www.healthcoachingaustralia.com).

What does it involve?

A one-on-one meeting to talk about your health concerns and goals, then follow-up sessions (either face to face or via phone/email) until you are satisfied with your progress.

Health Coaching can help you to:

  • Lose weight and keep it off
  • Stick to your exercise plans
  • Manage high cholesterol or high blood pressure
  • Manage diabetes
